The Uniconz

The Uniconz were inspired to start up their brand because of the fact that they couldn’t find the clothing they wanted anywhere in South Africa, so they decided to make what they wanted instead of waiting for it to come a year later. However what most of us may not know is that they started as an idea in 2011 to later move on as a movement in 2012 and then they officially became a brand in 2013.

Today we know them to be one of our local street culture fashion brands who aim to be one of the leading brands who influence our street culture. The Uniconz are more than just a brand instead they are a brand that challenges social norms; they communicate a lifestyle through their clothing, by introducing people to new perspectives of looking at life and offer them an experience. The amount of sales and units they push is not a big factor because they make a limited number of pieces; therefore their impact on our street culture hasn’t kicked in yet because the response has been so overwhelming.

They don’t regret any of the choices they’ve made when creating The Uniconz as it is those very same decisions that have brought them to where they are today. The Brand has helped them meet a lot of people in the creative industry which has given them the opportunity to learn from them and the people they have come across have inspired them to follow their dreams. Each brand is different and unique therefore they don’t believe that there is any competition as they are all part of one community; instead they can learn from each other.

Their recent lookbook was inspired by a lucid dream, the psychology of a dream where the viewer is aware that they are dreaming and can consciously control the events within the dream. “One of us experienced a lucid dream then we did research as to how we can adapt it to our clothing and lookbook.” They work with ‘72 Photography’ for all their visuals and they will continue to work with them as they really understand their vision and challenge them conceptually.  Even though they make their own clothes, when it comes to their designs they research what is happening worldwide then go the opposite direction with male and females in mind. And besides shopping at RHTC Online they usually do their shopping at Cotton On and TopMan.

As one of the pioneers of our street culture they think South Africa is on the right track and can give our international neighbours a run for their money. “Our only problem is that we lack unity, we push each other down instead of uniting and showing the world what South African street culture has to offer because let’s face it, strength is in numbers.”

In the next couple of years they see themselves “as a one of the leading street wear brands, revolutionizing Manufacturing in South Africa, at fashion week and helping people reach their dreams.”

 The Uniconz 101

·         How did you come up with the name for your Brand and which other names would you guys have gone for if it had not been what you guys have chosen now?

We were in the corridors of Mondeor High during break throwing a few names around then Unicorn stuck and was pushed a step further into Unique Icons. All that was left to do was change the spelling of the name so it can be unique to us. This is why we omitted the “R” and used a “Z”. We don't remember other names that were thrown around because it was just a freestyle brainstorm session.

·         If you had to invade a celebrity’s closet, which celebrity would it be (Internationally and locally)?

Yeezus!!!

·         Which piece of clothing item do you believe is a necessity and one cannot live without?

A leather jacket.

·         In your spare time, when you guys aren’t working, what do you love doing?
 Barry: I party
 Sanza: I sleep
