SOCIAL DIARY: Where you should be this weekend

If you have ever wondered if there is any type of relationship between art and fashion and you would love to see the two not so different worlds of Visual art and Jewelry come together, then why don’t you make plans to spend a day at the SIIC exhibition ‘Art Is Currency’? Which will be hosted by the inspirational Belinda Phofu, who is of course the creative brain behind Style Is Incalculable. She has teamed up with 16 artists to bring her vision to life and together they will be showing us how they interpret the relationship between Jewelry and Art.

Therefore, if you have not yet made any plans for this Saturday; and you would like to not only experience an exhibition which brings together 2 worlds but also mingle with people who appreciate art then why don’t you come through?
Those who create are rare; those who cannot are numerous. Therefore, the latter are stronger.”_ Coco Chanel

STYLE DIARY

On Tuesday we had Belinda Phofu representing the ladies in this week’s Style Diary. However since we have had many beautiful ladies featured in our Style Diaries, I think it’s only fair that we appreciate what men have to offer in terms of Style. Therefore; Khaya Sithole will be dong for the guys in this week.  Khaya describes himself as, “A young blogger from JHB, with a deep passion for suits and tailoring, a luxurious taste, attention to detail, ambitious for educating young men of South Africa, a creative and a visionary.”
He also may consider his style to be formal yet eccentric not forgetting that it’s influenced by our very own street style. His weeks are never boring as you may often find him setting up interviews with bespoke tailoring brands, interacting with people who influence our street culture and even have time for a cup of coffee with a friend.

STYLE DIARY

Everybody say hello to Belinda Phofu! Our first Fashionista of the week in 2015. You may know here as the creative behind the SIIC accessory line, Style_Is_Incalculable and she has been featured on Minc.Ink a few times , however this time we focus more on her SIIC style.

What I'm currently into/what I've been wearing lately.
Is a lot of denim on denim, mixing that with some prints, like printed blouses and or shirts. As well as the crop top trend and pairing that with high waisted pieces. Pants, skirts, shorts. I feel wearing crop tops with high waisted items as opposed to low cut items gives your outfit some class. Low cut items have the tendency of making you look like you’re trying to/ hard

Be sure to get yourself to her exhibition which will be held on the 31st of January. At 44 Stanley Auckland Park.

Brands To Look Out For In 2015

Each year we are introduced to new brands who think that they can take over our street culture in terms of fashion, however only the toughest and most creative brands who are able to keep up with the times survive. Therefore I decided to list my favourite brands which I feel that we should look out for in 2015. And so in today’s post, we follow up from my last post, which focused on the top street Culture Brands that we should look out for in 2015.

HAMBOGEZA’s hustle may be going strong but TRILL AND TAILORED also known as TAT is another brand which one cannot ignore. Not only is the founder, Mo Mandita, a very stylish guy but he uses his brand to creatively express himself as an artist. However he isn’t doing this alone, “the brands growth has been due to the efforts of people such as Roy”.  Their creativity isn’t limited in any way or specific form as Mo desires to inspire with his art and create pieces that will change industries forever. Soon they will be taking over the country as they have recently had orders from Cape Town and Durban proving that they do not only intend to run the street Culture in Johannesburg only, but they intend on going national.

Staying true to our South African Roots we have RETROFONTEIN, which was founded by Kabelo Tseko and Sizwe Zulu, who came up with the idea of having a brand which is inspired by our heritage. “The essence of why we were inspired to start Retrofontein was because we wanted to do something that represented our African Heritage”. And what would our Proudly South African Street Culture be without a brand which actually represented our roots and where we come from. In a Street culture which is filled with brands which represent where we currently are as a youth, it is important to have a brand which can mix up our current culture with our heritage. Because after all, as they say, it’s important to know where you come from, to know where you are heading.

The KreativeBeings is a brand that goes beyond the garment as their focus lies strongly on the design aesthetic of their products, which is why they have become one of the leading brands which contribute to our street culture. Their ability to challenge people’s imagination and interpret that through their designs is what makes them unique and unforgettable. And which is one of the many reasons why we should look out for them 2015.

Although we have all these amazing brands contributing towards our street culture it’s exciting to know that there is an online store which supports the vision of most of our leading Street Brands. Founded by Frypan, RETURNING HOME TO CREATE may have created a home for brands Such as Babatunde, The Uniconz and KreativeBeings. Frypan stated that, “Culture is an ideology, its theoretical, you experience it every day through phrases and the clothes you wear. You look at a person’s appearance and from their appearance you can identify the culture they represent”. Therefore RHTC sells more than just clothes, they design, and use their designs to manipulate the Culture in a certain way. And if you have been keeping up with the times you will know that they have recently created a home for Soigné, Thesis, Skinny Sbu Socks and Casio.

Our fashion industry is definitely growing and becoming a big part of our street culture. With brands like these to look out for we can only expect an exciting 2015. Therefore to ensure that it keeps growing and improving we should keep support them so that they can keep on bringing us the best.

Brands to look out for in 2015

To all those who haven’t noticed yet, it is 2015. Which can only mean one thing: The Hustle continues. Last year I introduced you to my favourite brands and judging by what they did in the previous year, we can only expect the best from them this year. And so to kick off the year, with this two-part post, I thought I’d present to you the brands that we should look out for in 2015.
Last year we not only witnessed the following brands bring the heat but thanks to RHTC we also saw some new brands hit the scene, helping us leave the year with some interesting Christmas presents. However, if you are not clued up on the brands I am talking about, it is of course Soigné, Skinny Sbu Socks and Casio.
And so, in no particular order I’d like to present to you my favourite street brands which we should definitely look out for in 2015.
Getting the list started, representing the ladies is of course Belinda Phofu, who is the creative behind the SIIC accessory line ‘Style Is Incalculable’. Each piece she creates is as unique as she is. Belinda doesn’t sketch her designs, because she doesn’t allow herself to get too technical about them. Instead she allows herself to interpret her feelings through her pieces. She brings us one of a kind pieces which can complete and compliment any look and she has a piece for every kind of lady; whether you love your accessories to be bold or understated she has something for you.
Although we have Belinda doing it for the ladies, we also have a particular brand which has been around for some time now representing both males and females who may consider themselves to be Unique Iconz. I am of course talking about the UNICONZ. Having been around for some time now, we can safely say that they have gained some serious street cred.  They give us unique pieces throughout the year, which can be used to express ones individuality. What started out as an idea, then a movement has now become a brand which is one of the driving forces behind our street Culture. They are more than just clothing, instead they are a brand which challenges Social Norms. And with their interesting concepts, one can never predict what we can expect from them.

The UNICONZ have been around for some time now however they are not the only driving force behind our street Culture.  HAMBOGEZA which is founded by William and Qiniso, is a brand which is starting to make some serious waves on our streets. William believes that he has no competitors as he believes everyone should stay in their lane. And it is that thinking that can only make a brand go far. Teaming up with the Photographer Gondo to bring across his vision, can only be a match made in heaven; as together they come up with gripping concepts for their photo-shoots leaving us wanting more. Judging by last year and their current presence on our streets one can only wait in anticipation for what they can give us in 2015.

Although I have only mentioned a few brands in today’s post, there is definitely more to our street culture than the few I have mentioned. However, this is only the first part of the two-piece post, therefore, you will have to look out for the next post to find out more about which brands I believe will give us only the best in 2015.

A Holiday To Remember

The festive Season is almost coming to an end as next week everything goes back to normal. However, I must admit that although I didn’t go anywhere this festive season, I did make the most of Johannesburg. I spent some of my Saturday afternoons within the excitement of Braamfontein, going out with friends and even catching up with some friends from the past.

I even spent a Sunday afternoon with a couple of my friends from High School over at Maboneng, which I must say was a pretty cool experience as we got a chance to truly experience the chilled vibes of a typical Sunday afternoon in Maboneng. Besides spending a lot of time with family from Durban, showing them around the City of Gold, I myself had the amazing chance of being a tourist in my very own city.

The Following Pics were Taken at Maboneng when I had spent my Sunday afternoon with the very cool Gomolemo, Kamogelo and Neo!

However I am excited about 2015 and you can only expect more posts about all things Stylishly Unique.
