Style Is InCalculable

This week I had the amazing opportunity to speak to the talented jewellery designer Belinda Phufo who is the brains behind the brand ‘Style Is InCalculable’, also known as SIIC. “The reason behind the name came from people always using the, slang word "sick" to describe what they thought of my rings. They'd say things such as, “aww B dude, this ring is so sick".”  And this week we get to find out more about her brand and the inspiration behind it all.
“Initially I began making jewellery just to keep me busy. This all started after I matriculated and had to take a gap year because I couldn't afford to go to varsity. I've always loved working with my hands and creating things. When I noticed that there was a demand for my products I decided to start selling them”. What started out as just a hobby to keep busy during a gap year eventually turned out to be a SIIC accessory line which would take the designer of the line Belinda Phufo on an incredible journey such as being featured on an online magazine from the UK called ‘Creative Talent’, as well as being featured in local magazines, ‘Flat Based Decoded’ and ‘StarStudded Magazine.” SIIC has also been fortunate enough to work with Black Nation Magazine on SIICs branding and marketing. Black nation further went to do a shoot which can be seen on YouTube. I will also be doing work for my friend who has recently started a magazine called ‘Silhouette- Seen from a different Light’ ”
What many people may not know is that Belinda dropped out of school, which may have not seemed like the greatest of ideas to her mother as her mother wanted her to work towards a better future through completing her education. “Especially since my mom works 2 jobs, so for her all she wants is to know that I'll have a secure future one day and not have to end up struggling as she does. And like many parents she doesn't feel that a there's a secure future in the arts.” However she went against her mother’s wishes and left school to follow her dream of becoming a jewellery designer. Even though she has dropped out of school, she wants to build her brand and she has plans on furthering her education by going back to school next year to focus solely on building her brand.
Therefore she wouldn’t change any of the decisions she took while she was starting SIIC as she believes that everything happens for a reason including all the hardships that we’re faced with all happen to shape us for anything we may come across in the future. She also doesn’t see anyone as competition as she believes that she’s her biggest competitor “I tend to be so hard on myself at times, never feeling like I'm doing enough and or like my hustle is paying off. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm making progress even if it's slow and that eventually all my hustle will pay off.”
She has, however, come to realise that the industry in which she works in does not always accommodate females especially if you’re young. “It seems as if people undermine you a lot when you're young. They have this mentality that your dream is just a pipe dream and that it's not going to take you anywhere and soon you'll realise that.” However she is not willing to give up despite how people may treat her, They also treat you with less respect and don't take you as seriously as they would someone who’s older.”

Belinda would say her life has changed in positive and negative ways. Despite facing challenges of gender and age she has also realised that not everyone will be on your team which was one of the reasons why she has preferred to cut off some people from her life. Which may have resulted in her losing some friends, “I feel life is too short to be in relationships/friendships that don't serve you. Support is important, it’s something I value above many other things and anyone who wasn't giving me what I needed had to be cut off.”
When it comes to her line, each piece is unique in its own way and each creation tells us a different story, “I don’t sketch any of my designs before I make them. I just get ideas in my head and then get creating. I don’t allow myself to be too technical about my designs. I allow myself to interpret my feelings into my designs. Which is what I feel. Just interpretations of my feelings at that current time.”

When it comes to her personal style, she loves vintage and antiques and so she is inspired by the whole concept of being different and just expressing yourself the way you would like to. And staying true to her love of all things vintage she believes that everyone should own a Vintage denim styled jacket, “they are essential for all seasons and they're are timeless pieces. If you don't have one then you need to hit your nearest thrift store now.” And given the opportunity she would definitely raid Zaki Ibrahim and Solange Knowles closets. On the other hand when it comes to shopping she is into thrift shopping as well as shopping in her mothers and aunts closets. “I'm not big on brands. When I shop the last thing on my mind is the brand. I just buy what I think is SIIC”.
Belinda advices anyone who wants to get into the industry to truly have a passion for what you are doing “You need to love what you do if you want to get into the industry because it's not easy. You have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone and hustle like a mad man. Because that's what it's about. Hustle!” We can only expect greater things to come from Belinda as she plans on taking SIIC global,” I see SIIC being a global brand in the next five years. Some might say I should be realistic But that's what I want and I'm going to work hard to make that happen.”

5 More seconds with Belinda

1.   What do you think of our South African Street Culture?
I think South African street fashion is amazing, I love how it's growing and becoming a culture on its own.

2.   Do you see yourself as just a brand or do you sell more than just jewellery. Do you promote a certain way of living if so what is your philosophy for life?
I always tell people that the one thing that Id want people to take away from SIIC besides the fact that it's a jewellery brand is to always be yourself.

You are Art and Art knows no boundaries. Express yourself exactly how you want to the way you want to. Hence the name "incalculable"

3.   If given the chance which other brands would you collaborate with?
There are a few brands which I'll be collaborating in the next few months, such as heavy empire (which is brand that specialises in music and fashion and event organising)
4.   Spring is around the corner, what tips do you have for spring?
My tips for spring would be the same as for every other season.
Dress for your personality and most importantly for your body.
Something looking good on someone else doesn't mean it'll have the same effect on you as well.
Most importantly, have fun with your outfits, don’t be afraid to experiment.

5.   When you aren’t working what are you doing?
In my spare time I'm usually listening to music. I love music, playing play station with my younger brother and watching my favourite sitcom 'Everybody hates Chris’

Fashionista Of The Week

This week’s Fashionista is someone who not only has a beautiful sense of style but she is someone who has a gorgeous soul too, with an inspirational outlook towards life.  I had the privilege to spend a couple of my schooling years with her, Where I would  look at her looks and ask  myself how does she do it? Her look was subtle, classy and trendy. However in all of her looks she managed to stay true to herself and she ultimately proved that less is more and that staying true to you and not    always following the crowd is always best. And I must say I am very happy to have her as this week’s Fashionista of the week.

This week’s Fashionista of the week is the beautiful Miss Lebogang Manamela, a 20 year old free spirited individual who is a lover of all things ART. She describes herself as a 'Creative Confident' who believes that your style is your story and who you are on the inside will surface on the outside in one way or the other. And for her, who she is, is interpreted through her style especially since she believes that her style is an outer representation of her inner self.  Lebo is currently doing her 2nd year at the University of Johannesburg and was recently voted one of the Top 10 Female students in her  university, the poll surveyed other universities not only the university where she is currently a student.

1.     Who inspires you in terms of style?

The gents should keep sweaters and jackets in the colours of black, burgundy, navy and tan, pairing them with a pair of well-fitting trousers.

OhOneOne

Last week was a very interesting week for me as I had the amazing chance to speak to Roxy Burger of OhOneOne. We all know OhOneOne is an online store which caters to the needs of the fashion forward woman whose “clothes don’t whisper, they announce her entrance. She is bright, confident and knows what she loves. She isn’t afraid to stand out and be different. That’s exactly what she loves about herself”. And here is all you need to know about the awesome OhOneOne.

“A lack in original, unique and inspiring clothes for the fashion forward women” is what inspired TV Presenter and Producer, Roxy Burger, and Stylist and Personal Shopper, Sarah Mitchell to start their fabulous Online store OhOneOne. “We also felt like eCommerce is the future of retail.” OhOnOne is about uniqueness and definitely not about the ordinary “Why should your clothes not shout out who you are in the world? We believe in clothing that represents who you are as a person – it’s a way of communicating who you are without having to speak.”
Spike Leather Bracelet R150
OhOneOne will be celebrating their first birthday very soon as it was launched on the 23rd of October 2013, and because they’re still young they spend a lot of their time on marketing their business and constantly evolving their business model and strategy. Even when choosing their models, they usually approach up and coming models to help them build their careers and they also prefer to work with models who they admire in the industry.

Although they’re an online store, everything they stock is proudly OhOneOne as they work with their own designs.  Which is what makes them unique; “We don’t know of any one online store who offers unique, and limited, clothing. There may be a few smaller boutique stores but we don’t believe they have an online presence.” However if given the opportunity they would love to collaborate with a local designer to create a one-of-a-kind range. They offer the best clothing at the most affordable prices and because they mostly trade through the internet they still do aim at giving customers the best service they can offer, especially since they don’t meet their customers face-to-face, so it is important that the customer still feels like they come first.

Most of their style inspiration comes from Cara Delivigne; “We love Cara Delivigne – she is the epitome of what we want to achieve with our style and perspective on fashion.” Hence, they would definitely go through her closet and maybe even her sister Poppy’s closet as well and “It would be awesome to have a peek into Bonang’s closet too”. When it comes to shopping, of course they usually shop at OhOneOne and even in their spare time they’re surfing the net looking out for the latest fashion trends, “we love to browse through the online pages of many awesome fashion websites. And we online shop”

Our South African Fashion Industry is interestingly growing and when I asked Roxy about her opinion on the industry she said “I think we can sometimes be quite timid about our style. And we should be bolder since we have an African spirit within us.” She also believes that our street fashion is getting there as we are more daring than the ordinary.  And she advices anyone wanting to get into the industry to, “be prepared to work incredibly hard for what you want. Success isn’t overnight.”And with OhOneOne ready to celebrate their 1st birthday we can only look forward to more fabulous years from them, as when I asked them where they see themselves in the next 5 years Roxy said, “Taking over the eCommerce industry!”

4 more minutes with Roxy

1.  How did you come up with the name for your brand?
OhOneOne represents the Johannesburg dialling code as we are both from the City of Gold.

2.  What would you say is the best part of working for OhOneOne?
The excitement of starting something from scratch and building our brand one step at a time.

3. Which piece of clothing item do you believe is a necessity and one cannot live without?
A great pair of jeans and a great pair of comfy, black heels.

4. Spring is around the corner, what tips do you have for spring?
Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Be bold!

The Guy Behind The Lens

Not only is he my friend, the guy with a cool personality and a unique sense of style but he is the guy who is insanely talented and shows us the world from a different perspective through the lens of his camera. most of us may know him as the guy behind the Tumblr page; Alternative Visuals, and in staying true to the name of his blog; The way he views his world is interpreted through his images, he shows us an Alternative way of the world in which we live in, which may seem boring at times. However, the images he takes show us an Alternative way of viewing our world, usually taking pictures of moments which he believes may not happen again.
Last week Saturday I had the great opportunity to work with the one and only photographer Teboho Gondo, who is mostly referred to as Gondo and the pictures which were taken by him are featured in this week’s post, ‘HAMBOGEZA’.
So I thought that it would be pretty cool for us to get to know him and what inspired him to pick up his camera and show us a different approach to everyday life through his striking images.
 And here is all you need to know about the distinctive Gondo;
”I started doing photography in grade 8, 3 years ago. I started shooting with my phone and began documenting. It came easy and I was good at it. I kept doing it and I realised people actually can make money off of photography and I thought if I could make money off of something that I am good at, why not.

I love photography because I think photographers are ultimately like light benders. Light plays a crucial role in our lives because it’s everywhere, we [photographers] manipulate light, hence the term light bender *laughs* photography is ultimately the art of manipulating light.
My dream for my photography is to own a company that is an agency for models and a business that has an army of photographers to cover events in our country and ultimately the rest of the world. My business will be one that comers both markets but one that will stay true to its artistic integrity. My only happiness comes from documenting the moments in time that we may never have again, the fleeting moments in our lives.”

You can definitely keep up with Gondo on his Tumblr page @ www.Alternativevisuals.tumblr.com However If Instagram is your thing you can follow him @sar_revolutionary or you can simply just follow him on twitter @Gondo__

HAMBOGEZA

HAMBOGEZA also known as HAM is one of the Fashion brands which contribute to our South African Street Culture, it was founded by William and Qiniso and Last week Saturday, I had a great opportunity to speak to William to find out more about HAM.

HAMBOGEZA is a phrase which is derived from the Zulu language which when translated means 'Go bath'. It’s not only an interesting name for a brand, but how it came into existence is just as interesting. William says that the name for the brand was inspired by an encounter with a homeless person while having a night out in Rosebank. He says the homeless person had recognised him and advised him to make something original and African. And two days later William suggested the name HAMBOGEZA to his partner Qiniso. And in staying true to the name of the brand, it is through HAM that they interpret the idea of staying clean, true to yourself and being ahead of the game.
The journey of HAMBOGEZA all began when William and Qiniso were in grade 9 and Qiniso had come up with the idea of starting something unique. Yet looking back, the only thing they would change about their journey is their marketing and planning skills, they didn’t plan much which is why today William believes that “when you don’t plan, you plan to fail”. And since the beginning of HAM William has gained a lot of recognition and some may even say that he is an inspiration and even iconic.
The fashion industry is a competitive industry however William doesn't think he has much competitors as he believes everyone should stay in their lane because everyone is doing something different and unique and therefore you’re only competing with yourself. Though William wouldn't describe himself as an artists but he would rather describe himself as a visionary who is here to solve problems. And when asked about our South African Street Culture Fashion William said that, “I feel like South Africans always overdo it, everyone follows the same trend, we all try looking different that we all end up the same”  hence William believes that everyone should stay in their own lane.
When it comes to their photography HAMBOGEZA works closely with the photographer Teboho Gondo, who does most of their photography and even when it comes to coming up with concepts “we usually sit down with Gondo when working out our concepts. And we do plan on continuing to work with Gondo”, hence they are a packaged deal.
Although they are becoming a well-known brand, William says that he does not believe in collaborations but if the opportunity had to present itself he wouldn’t mind collaborating with Nike rather than any other local brand. However a lot of his inspiration comes from Andy Warhole because “he basically created pop culture and has a unique vision”
Andy Warhole may inspire William a lot but if he had to invade a celebrity’s closet, it would have to be Theophilis London’s closet as he may be a reflection of Williams style, “his style is a lot like mine”. But when it comes to shopping William heads straight for TopShop when looking for High-Street fashion, but then again most of the time he is wearing his own clothes. And according to William; the most important item of clothing you could have is sneakers, “Nothing completes an outfit like sneakers” but when it comes to winter style he believes in keeping it simple and layers are important.  And when he isn’t working, you might catch him drawing.
He advices anyone who may want to get into the fashion industry to only get in if you have the passion and drive as many people mostly do it for the money and fame, “People don’t have the right mind set. Don’t get in with no passion, stay in your lane”. We can definitely expect much more from HAM because when William was asked about where he sees himself in the next 5 years he simply said; he sees himself on top.

WAKE

Last week Sunday I spent the day at Maboneng and had the amazing opportunity to speak to designers Pieter and Carla of WAKE.
The pair has been great friends who have known each other since childhood and even had the great opportunity of attending the Fashion School LISOF together. Although they're currently taking on the Fashion industry together; it was Pieter who started WAKE in February Last year, 2013. Then later on this year Carla came on board and they've been working together building WAKE into the brand that it is today.

Pieter had been styling for a while before he started WAKE and was inspired by wanting to get his own point of view across instead of working around other people’s vision. The name for the brand was inspired by his heritage; Pieter is of Irish decent and it was his Irish heritage which inspired the name of the brand.  In the Irish culture they believe that they go to a WAKE instead of a Funeral. They believe in celebrating the lives of those who have moved on as it is the new beginning of the soul into its second transition and that is how the name WAKE came around.
Most of their designs are inspired by things rather than people, ranging from cool animal prints to music, however music being one of the prominent influencers of their designs. Since the beginning of Wake, Pieter is always thinking of new ideas hence he sees WAKE as a platform to live out his creativity. Most ideas for designs start when Pieter listens to music which then become stories. Even though they’ve got very interesting stories to tell which are interpreted through their garments; Pieter and Carla don't think of themselves as artists; however they would love to work with visual artists as they believe that the combination of both fashion and art would only result in beautiful pieces. Especially since Carla thought of a future in visual art, before even thinking of a career in fashion. Therefore if the opportunity had to present itself, they would work with visual artists to bring together the combination of two different points of views.
The stories which are interpreted through their garments are also represented in their photo-shoots; Pieter’s styling background helps him come up with the concepts; since everything is visual, they look for a specific model who  will help them bring their vision to life and a model who embodies the look and passion of WAKE. Especially since it is through their pieces that they promote a certain lifestyle as they design for a person who sees something in their garments which they would like to portray. To avoid being stagnated in their photo-shoots, they work with different photographers as they believe that you need to work with different people.
Carla and Pieter don’t like shopping much mainly because most of the items they want aren’t easily available as they have very big ideas, therefore they only shop for basic items and wear their own designs, however they would love to invade Lady Gagas’ closet mainly for the shoes and wigs. Pieter and Carla both believe that a leather jacket is a necessity as it adds a bit of edge to any look and for the winter season oversized jerseys are good too especially if you’re going for more of a Grunge look. And when Pieter isn’t working you will find him relaxing with his family as he is very family orientated.

Even though the South African fashion industry is still growing and progressing, they believe that its moving in the right direction. And as our fashion industry is still growing Carla and Pieter look at other designers and brands as just different point of views instead of competitors, as every designer and creative all bring across their own vision.

Looking back they would’ve started their brand much later as they would’ve preferred to gain some experience and learn through the eyes of a different designer as well as having the opportunity to make mistakes. Therefore they advise anyone who wants to get into the fashion industry to gain experience from anywhere, whether it’s working at a magazine or doing make up, it is best to build your name before your brand. The future is only brighter for Pieter and Carla as they’ll be opening a shop soon and they hope that within the next five years they will become more successful and have the opportunity to do other things.
To keep up to date with the latest from WAKE and what Pieter and Carla get up too, you can check out their website @ www.wake-us.co.za. You can e-mail them too using the following address itsawakeworld@gmail.com or just call them; 084 206 5334.
