Returning Home To Create

They do not only sell clothing and as they would say “We are street artists who sell culture”, The RHTC family is an online store which currently consists of The Unicornz, Babatunde and Kreative Beings. Recently I had the privilege to spend a day with the RHTC family and here’s what they had to say.

Who would have thought that the lyrics at the end of a song by Kendrick Lamar would be the inspiration for a brand name that would soon grow into one of the leading brands which influence our very own street culture? Returning Home To Create also well known as RHTC was formed on the 2nd of February 2012, the idea to use the same effort you use to find a job, to instead create something revolutionary was one of the reasons why RHTC was formed. Returning Home To Create is a name which also represents the idea of where they started and where they aim to take their brand. The name was inspired by Kendrick Lamar’s ROTC interlude, Right On Time Conscience and from those 4 simple letters RHTC, Returning Home To Create was formed.

They don’t regret much of the decisions they took when forming RHTC as they believe that you learn from experience and not the textbook however they do believe that they could’ve used with better support and more structure. Sizwe from Kreative Beings, which is one of the brands which help make up RHTC, says that everything happened so quickly that they could’ve used with better planning because even though they were pushing a Kreative lifestyle, they jumped too quickly without planning.

Frypan stated that “Culture is an ideology, its theoretical; you experience it every day through phrases and the clothes you wear. You look at a person’s appearance and from their appearance you can identify the culture they represent” therefore RHTC sell more than just the clothes they design, because they are part of the street culture and they work from within it, they use their designs to manipulate the culture in a certain way. However it is through their garments that they interpret what is currently going on in the culture. RHTC is used as a platform to translate Urban Street culture; it is even evident in the brands which help form RHTC as they all represent Urban South African Street Culture.

RHTC is still developing , so they don’t see themselves as having made it but they see their growth when they see people from the streets wearing one of their designs and when they get delivery requests from people from other provinces either than Johannesburg and as well as international requests. Because they are still growing within the industry, they believe that they are still too young for any competition however their only competitors are international brands.

They work together to come up with the concepts for their videos and they work with each other’s strengths for example Frypan one of their members has been doing videos from Varsity, he worked with Sneak peak and Sanza Works with the Graphics and with a little bit of team effort from everyone they present to us the original videos we see and have come to enjoy. But their videos are also used as a tool to interpret what is currently happening within our South African Street Culture.

They play on their own ideas when choosing their everyday outfits so they don’t really look up to a certain person for style inspiration however if given the chance to invade a celebrities closet Sanza would invade Kanye Wests Closet, Berry would invade Scott Disick’s Closet and Sizwe would much rather invade Margiela’s closet. Therefore they don’t really go out much to do their shopping as they trade amongst each other and sometimes they even own items which may have not been made available for the public!

In this cold weather they advise us all to play outside, dress warm and of course wear RHTC. Berry spoke for everyone when he said that “If we worked together, eliminated all beefing and hate within the Street Culture as a whole the culture would grow and improve” Sanza supported the idea by saying that “our street culture is doing well but without unity it will not progress”. They also add that whoever wants to get into the industry that they are in they should be different, plan and have money.

There is no doubt that RHTC is here to stay and they are working towards leaving a mark within the industry. In the next five years we should expect to see them having more of an impact within the culture by building a stronger street cred. They don’t mind collaborating with other brands and with the Goal of being the Head of Design in the streets, we shouldn’t be surprised when we see them at Paris Fashion Week. They wouldn’t have gone into this industry if they didn’t have any vision and every day is chance for them to leave their mark in the industry.

Interesting Fact
RHTC started out with 3 Brands however 5 Months later one of the brands was then replaced with The Uniconz. Today we have come to know the RHTC family to be made up of The Uniconz, Kreative Beings and Babatunde. RHTC is still growing and in the future we should expect to see more brands joining the Family and of course coming out to play with the rest of us.
